RANT: Muslims

On New Years Eve I, unfortunately, rang in the New Year listening to an idiot rant about what he thought was, Muslims and their objectives. Naturally, he began his monologue of intolerance with “they should go back to their country” and “if they can’t abide by our customs they should leave.” It wasn’t long before I stopped him because no matter how many vodka sodas I got down before that conversation, no amount of alcohol can make me more tolerant to intolerance.

Muslims are not terrorists, so do not turn them into your own personal caricature or stereotype, or scapegoat to be the source of all your problems.  Islam is a faith just as much as Christianity is a faith, both have the ability to reach radical places but do not ASSUME you know everything about a person because of their faith.

This year I will not tolerate anymore intolerance. I have reached my lifetime limit of prejudice, sexism, racism, islamaphobia and homophobia. I do not care or want to hear how uncomfortable the LGBTQ community makes you or whether or not you disagree with the Black Lives Matter movement. This year, I will not tolerate anymore monologues of prejudice or laugh when you say “That’s gay;” Sober or drunk, no matter how many vodka sodas I got down before the conversation, no amount of alcohol can, nor will, make me more tolerant to your intolerance. I will correct you if you say “coloured person;” I will correct you if you say “Muslims are terrorists;” I will correct you if you say “That’s gay.” My 2016 New Years Resolution is to not standby while a bigot makes a group of people their own personal caricature or stereotype, or a scapegoat to be the source of all their problems. This year, I will say, kindly and from the bottom of my heart, for every and any bigot to go fuck themselves. And with that, Happy Belated New Year.
