I’ve been asked on numerous occasions as to why I like BoJack Horseman. The show is a Netflix original and stars a washed-up, horse, has-been that starred in a sitcom in the 90s. While I could give you a million reasons as to why I love this show so much, here are 4.
One. Although the animal characters are anthropomorphic their animalistic traits are exaggerated.
Mr. Peanutbutter is a ditzy, happy-go-lucky dog who hates the mail man, but loves Diane Nyugen. Princess Carolyn is a go-getting cat with a fish-printed dress. Not to mention that fact that BoJack Horseman is a cultural has-been, and like a retired race horse he is simply waiting to be shot. Although in this society putting BoJack out of his misery would be considered murder, so instead he deals with his dwindling career with sex, alcohol and insulting Todd. Undeniably Bojack is the embodiment of a retired race horse who has been anthropomorphized. As a once majesti and innocent non-drinker BoJack has been halter trained and broken (excuse the riding terminology) by Hollywood. With the cancellation of his show came bouts of depression, self-loathing and a lack of purpose.
Also, Charlie is a panicky tree-frog that sticks to everything.
Two. The overwhelmingly hilarious puns.
Lululemming & Beast Buy & A Navy Seal.
Not to mention that Jon Hamm is actually a pig. The director of Jerry MaGuire, Cameron Crowe, is not portrayed as a crow but as a raven.
Three. The animals and their vices.
I’m obsessed with Princess Carolyn’s scratching post. Seated perfectly on her desk it’s the equivalent to a human’s stress ball. I also love this dog and his tray of bones rather than fries.
And this remarkable anthropomorphic binary of gossiping housewife watching their weight and loving chocolate meets dogs who can’t have chocolate at all.
Four. The spoofs of modern paintings. This one really arouses the geek in me. I can’t.

A spoof of Henry Matisse’s Dance (of Life) (1910)
The Andy Warhol inspired horseshoes in BoJack’s bedroom.
And, these Basquait inspired paintings in Herb’s office.
There are millions of reasons why I love this TV show, but for now I’ll only give you four.
